WHAT’S NEW IN THE “EXPANDED DATA EDITION”

When this gazetteer was first published, I realized there were more jurisdictions that could have been included and additional information was needed in some areas. Alas, I had to draw closure on the project at that time, due to the overwhelming demand for the publication by researchers. Over the interim of the five years between major editions, I obtained additional reference sources that were invaluable in revising the gazetteer and producing this “Expanded Data Edition.”

The following point form summary for the “Expanded Data Edition” includes highlights of major improvements. This edition includes over 93,000 jurisdiction (political & religious) identifications (27% increase over earlier editions) for over 14,000 place names (Polish, Ukrainian, and German) in Galicia. There are over 31,000 words of text in addition to the jurisdiction identifications representing a greater than 50% increase over the earlier edition. Endnotes are used over 10,000 times. In addition to the points listed below, hundreds of hours of additional cross-checking of data resulted in over 1,300 changes to the earlier editions.

New features include:

A new jurisdiction for the JEWISH REGISTRATION DISTRICT (for vital records) for each community in 1900 with endnotes indicating 527 differences in the year 1896.

A new jurisdiction for the LAND CADASTRAL COMMUNITY for each community (used for land records, tax records and detailed land maps).

The CYRILLIC UKRAINIAN PLACE NAMES have been added after the transliterated Ukrainian names. Also, 227 new Ukrainian place names (many for places in the "Lemko" area) have been added for a total of 4,052.

The number of communities with EVANGELICAL PARISHES identified has increased by 105%. Also, the CHECKLIST OF PLACES WHERE GERMANS LIVED and GERMAN-POLISH PLACE NAMES LIST are increased by over 25%.

The REFERENCE MAPS (now Appendix E) have been improved by adding the latitudes and longitudes (both Greenwich and Ferro) directly on the maps. These reference maps now refer to the 1:75,000 Austrian map series as well as the 1:200,000 series. The map sheet numbers, sheet boundaries, and adjoining map letters are shown with the reference maps.

Substantial increase in information re: sources in Ukraine and Poland. This includes NEW ADDITIONAL REPOSITORIES, ADDRESS CHANGES, and REFERENCES TO ARCHIVAL INVENTORIES.

The PRIMARY VILLAGE / TOWN / CITY LIST is replaced by the PRIMARY COMMUNITY / ESTATE LIST (City / Town / Village / Estate) and includes separate listings for "estate names" where the name was not the same as the community. Also, communities which did not have a corresponding estate by the same name are also endnoted.

SUPPLEMENTARY PLACE NAMES LIST increased by 398 places names.

The JUDICIAL DISTRICT is replaced by the JUDICIAL / TAX DISTRICT with endnotes where these two jurisdictions were not the same.

Place names have been changed to more closely align with the Austrian Gemeindelexikon. Most of the names changed from the original gazetteer are alternate names which were equally correct.
